How does AI know what it knows? And when does it get things wrong?

AI Explorers helps young people understand how AI works, question its impact, and think critically about how it should be used.

Workshop details About AI Explorers

What AI Explorers is

AI Explorers is a youth-focused educational initiative. It helps young people understand AI, think critically about technology and use it responsibly.

The initiative is connected to community and library education, and its first workshop is being developed for a library audience.

Questions we’ll explore together

The workshop is built around six questions. None of them need any experience with AI to join in.

  1. What is AI ?

What counts as artificial intelligence, where we see it, and how it’s already shaping everyday life.

  2. How does AI learn?

How AI systems learn from data and what happens when that data reflects human assumptions or biases.

  3. Can AI be wrong ?

Why AI can produce convincing but incorrect information, and who should be responsible when people rely on it.

  4. How does AI affect people?

How AI can influence learning, work, communication or decisions, and what makes those effects fair or unfair.

  5. What's real online?

How AI-generated content changes what we see online and how we decide what to trust.

  6. What should we do with AI?

When AI can create, recommend, predict or decide, what responsibilities people should have.

Why this matters

AI is becoming part of everyday life. Understanding it doesn’t mean learning to program. It means knowing enough to ask good questions.

  • Understanding how technology works. AI is made by people and shaped by the information it learns from.
  • Questioning what we read and watch. Something can sound confident and still be wrong.
  • Recognising AI-generated content. Knowing it exists is the first step to checking before we trust or share it.
  • Protecting privacy. Thinking about what we share with apps and AI tools, and who might see it.
  • Making our own judgements. Deciding when AI helps, and when to rely on ourselves or ask someone we trust.
